Around us are anti-human systems that were put in place with good intentions but often work against humans. They can make individuals feel like they did something wrong or blame themselves when things go wrong. Examples of these systems include:
- Customer service phone lines that require two or more menus to reach a human representative.
- Online job applications that require a resume and typed out experiences.
- QR codes for restaurant menus.
- Airports being built for the planes and not the humans walking (or running) between gates.
- Self checkouts that video record you and require staff to clear whenever it detects you “stealing”. Potentially all forms of self checkouts.
- Parking lots where people have to walk where cars drive (parking lots should have walking spaces for people-only designed in the shape of the the Palm).
- Anything anti-homeless
- Misleading media headlines
- Food deserts
- Office cubicles
- Website cookie banners
- Abbreviations
- Places with no free water or restrooms
- Places with no elevators, or are hostile to less able people.
- Retail stores with intentionally confusing layouts.
- Hard to cancel subscriptions
- Streets designed for cars only, “stroads“
- Housing developments with no communal spaces.
- Lack of sidewalks in neighborhoods.
- Libraries/cafes with intentionally uncomfortable seating to limit stay.
- Traffic lights with improper timing.
The world doesn’t have to exist this way. We can redesign these systems so their original goals are met while we Remember the human. at the same time.
